Hey Michigan - Target is rolling out new rules for its employees nationwide this holiday season, known as the '10-4 Policy.'

What the heck is the 10-4 Policy? It's all about customer service. According to USA Today, the 10-4 Policy is described as follows,

  • Target workers within 10 feet of a customer must smile, make eye contact, wave,  be friendly, and approachable.
  • Target workers within 4 feet of a customer must smile, personally greet the guest, and have some type of interaction.

To be clear, I don't go to Target very often, but on the occasions that I have, I’ve never felt ignored or overlooked by the employees. How about you? Have you ever had a different experience?

Call me crazy, but when working in retail, it feels like common sense to at least say hello to a customer. I mean, it’s not rocket science. Employees already know this, right?

Jokes aside, the 10-4 Policy is serious business.

Target has not announced when this new policy will take effect. Adrienne Costanzo, Target’s Vice President, had the following to say about it,

We know when our guests are greeted, feel welcomed and get the help they need that translates to guest love and loyalty. Heading into the holiday, we’re making adjustments and implementing new ways to increase connection during the most important time of the year powered by our team.

If you are planning a holiday shopping trip to Target, don’t be tempted to report an employee just because they did not immediately bow, kiss your feet, or roll out the red carpet.

They are there to help, sure, but they are not personal cheerleaders on demand. Happy Holidays!
