This stupid law doesn't apply to those living in Michigan but if you live in parts of Virginia, you could spend some time behind bars if you're caught trick or treating and you're over 12 years old.

It's hard to believe but is some areas going door to door, ringing or knocking and expecting a treat for those over 12 is a criminal offense. Yes, a criminal offense..one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.

According to hrScence, the city code claims in Chesapeake, if any person over the age of 12 years shall engage in the activity commonly known as “trick or treat” or any other activity of similar character or nature under any name whatsoever, he or she shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine of not less than $25.00 nor more than $100.00 or by confinement in jail for not more than six months or both.

While I don't personally think teenagers should be running around door to door, I don't think they should go to jail over it. Ideally, trick or treating is for little kids but if some teens wanna dress up and get some candy, it should be okay as long as they aren't out causing trouble.

I did see in an article that police in Virginia don't go around seeking out teens trick or treating, they just try and keep things safe.

As far as I  know, Michigan doesn't have a law in place for underage trick or treating.
