What is the Minimum Age to Legally Get a Tattoo in Michigan?
There are thousands of tattoo shops in Michigan to choose from when looking to get that permanent mark. It's a major commitment that should be taken seriously.
It's also a decision that should be made by someone over the age of 18.
While we've heard horror stories over the years of parents taking their young teen to a tattoo shop to get their first tattoo, is it actually illegal in Michigan?
What is the Minimum Age to Legally Get A Tattoo in Michigan?
While in most states it's against the law to tattoo someone under the age of 18, that's just not the case in Michigan. Surprisingly, there is no minimum age to get a tattoo in Michigan.
As long as a parent or legal guardian provides prior written informed consent and proof of that individual's authority, a child of any age can get a tattoo in Michigan.
The minor's parent or legal guardian shall execute the written, informed consent required under this section in the presence of the licensee or an employee or agent of the licensee. The minor's parent or legal guardian shall present to the licensee or employee or agent of the licensee the minor's birth certificate or legal proof of guardianship to establish the individual's authority to give the informed consent required under this section.
It is important to note that, even though there is no specific law preventing a tattoo artist from tattooing a minor with parental consent, most reputable tattoo artists would choose not to do so. Many consider it ethically questionable to tattoo a child, even with the necessary consent.
Shame on any parent who would even attempt to get their child tattooed.
