Two Michigan Cities Among the Worst in the U.S. for Mosquitoes
While Michiganders might not agree on much these days, there’s one universal truth: mosquitoes are the worst. Seriously, if anything’s going to push me over the edge mentally, it’s those bloodsucking little jerks.
Sure, there are all kinds of things we could do to keep these little demons at bay—plant mosquito-repelling herbs. Clear out standing water. Throw on layers of clothing. But let’s be real, who actually wants to do all that?
The most effective way to keep mosquitoes away is to have your yard professionally treated. But again, who wants to spend their hard-earned money on freaking mosquito prevention?
Unfortunately, for some Michigan residents, the battle against mosquitoes is more than just an occasional annoyance; it’s a full-on summer-long war.

Orkin put together a list of the worst cities for mosquitoes, and yep, Michigan didn’t get off easy. The rankings are based on how many people got mosquito treatments between April 2023 and March 2024. Basically, the more folks calling for help, the worse the mosquito problem. Even though the data was collected from 2023 to 2024, I doubt we’ll see much change in 2025.
What Michigan Cities Are the Worst for Mosquitoes?
Out of the 50 cities they looked at, two Michigan cities made the list.
#33 - Grand Rapids
The city’s proximity to rivers, ponds, and wetlands makes it an ideal breeding ground for those annoying bloodsuckers.
#10 - Detroit
Detroit landed near the top of the list, which honestly tracks. Warm, humid summers and plenty of standing water? Mosquito paradise.
The rest of the state isn’t much better, to be totally honest. Last year, Bay County had one of the highest mosquito-borne virus counts in Michigan. According to the state, 79 mosquito pools tested positive for West Nile Virus.
