We're just here to try and help stop the spreading of misinformation.

Yes, we know - people are wound tight right now. A global pandemic, a divisive election, and the stressors of everyday life are definitely weighing on us all, and that's resulting in a lot of lashing out and misinformation being spread online.

Over the weekend, a post in the Criminals of Flint Facebook group gained some attention - apparently, people who are trying to get their Concealed Pistol License in Genesee County are having their appointments canceled; some people attributed it to the outcome of the election.

The simple answer here is NO, it has absolutely nothing to do with the election.

The Genesee County Clerk's Office is encouraging online applications if you're renewing your CPL. However, if you're a new gun owner who is trying to obtain your license, you'll need to make an appointment, which will include a $15 fee for fingerprinting.

When an application is filed, our office provides the applicant with a receipt that authorizes the taking of fingerprints.  It is the responsibility of the applicant to take the receipt to the Genesee County Sheriff's Office to begin the required criminal background checks.

Some people who had appointments said that they were canceled by the clerk's office and blamed the outcome of the election. In actuality, it was closed because of a COVID outbreak in the jail amongst inmates and staff.

As of this morning, the Genesee County Clerk's Office is back open for fingerprinting and CPL applications.

Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson was kind enough to talk to us this morning about what happened:

It was because we had a spike in the jail; we dodged a bullet for so long, but everything is back open now. We have a quarantine in place; we had more than 25 inmates infected, nothing serious, most of them had no symptoms. But now that we rapid test in the jail, that's what you get. We wanted to make sure we had a handle on it. We went back to the procedures we had in place earlier this year. As of this morning, the clerk's office is back open for fingerprinting.
