Emotions High – Bishop Kelly Catholic School In Lapeer Is Closing
Parents of students at Bishop Kelly Catholic School have been vocal on social media over the recent announcement that the downtown Lapeer school is permanently closing.
Shock, anger, and sadness seem to be the common theme. I have read countless comments on Facebook from parents about how heartbroken they are. I have also read comments that involve finger-pointing and blame. Whatever the case, the end result is the school is indeed closing.
So why is the school closing you ask? Money, and not enough of it. Parents of BKCS students were sent the following letter from Father Brian Hurley,
I am glad that the letter references the archdiocese will be working with Bishop Kelly Catholic School staff in terms of finding new employment. As far as relocating students, that will be up to individual parents. There are other Catholic schools of course, but not in Lapeer. I am not a parent, but if I was I don't think I would want to drive over an hour to take my kid(s) to school. Maybe that is why it's a good thing I don't have kids?
The rumor mill will continue to work overtime in terms of this upsetting announcement. Blame will be placed and fingers will be pointed. That being said, the kids and the faculty are what is most important. I know many of you will cherish your memories of Bishop Kelly Catholic School.
The next question is what will the building be used for now?
