End of an Era: Iconic Genesee County Restaurant Closes for Good
After roughly 100 years in business, a well-loved restaurant in Genesee County is officially closed. We believe it’s been closed for a while, but people thought it was coming back since there was a sign on the door saying it was just "closed for remodeling." Even Google still says it’s "temporarily closed."
Halo Burger (originally Kewpee) in Downtown Flint has been a staple in the community since the 1920s. While customers hoped it might reopen someday, a new sign on the window announcing the building is for sale (or available) seems to be the final nail in the coffin.

According to Flint Beat, Halo Burger initially shut down in 2020 due to the pandemic and planned renovations. It reopened a year and a half later after the renovations were completed, but then it closed again. What led to the second and final closure remains unclear. There seems to be a lot of confusion on social media about when they actually closed. I'll be honest, I'm a little confused as well.
It's always sad to see a business shut down, but this one hurts a little more than others since it’s been such a big part of so many people’s lives. Whether it was a quick stop for an olive burger after work, a late-night craving fix, or just a place that felt like home, Halo Burger was more than just a restaurant—it was a piece of Flint’s history.
