11 Million Pounds of Meat Recalled Over Listeria Concerns

UPDATE 10/18: According to FSIS, Ready-to-eat meat products that have been recalled over possible listeria contamination were sent to Michigan schools.

FSIS notes the products that went to these schools were not part of USDA’s National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs; schools also purchase food directly from other vendors.

Nearly 10 million pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry products are being recalled due to possible Listeria contamination in Michigan and nationwide.

This comes after more than 700 million Boars Head meat products were recalled earlier this year, also due to Listeria.

BrucePac Meat Recall Due to Listeria Concerns

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced BrucePac (located Durant, Okla.) is recalling approximately 9,986,245 pounds of meat products to due Listeria concerns on Oct. 9, 2024.

UPDATE: As of 10/15, the pounds of recalled products have been updated to 11,765,285 pounds.

The issue was discovered when ISIS performed routine product testing on items containing RTE poultry. They tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes. After further investigation, FSIS identified RTE chicken as the source.

Listeriosis can be a serious and sometimes fatal infection in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Although healthy people may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

What Products are Included in BrucePac Recall?

According to FSIS, the recalled meat products were produced from June 19, 2024, to October 8, 2024.

They were shipped to distributors nationwide, then sent to stores, restaurants, and other institutions.

The recalled RTE meat has establishment numbers "51205 or P-51205" inside or under the USDA mark of inspection.

Products include pre-cooked chicken strips, chicken patties, diced chicken, beef patties, fajita beef strips, and more. See the full list of recalled products here.

According to USA Today, on October 12, FSIS updated the list of recalled products to include salads, sandwiches, wraps, and frozen meals containing chicken like pastas and burrito bowls sold at the below stores:

Trader Joe's
Walmart
Wegmans
7-Eleven

See the labels, lot codes. and use-by dates of affected items here.

They suggest checking back frequently as more items are added.

FSIS is concerned some recalled products may still be available in restaurants, schools, hospitals, and other institutions. Institutions should check their inventory and consumers their refrigerators and freezers.

If you have any of the recalled products, throw them away or return them for a refund.
