Is It Really Illegal To Cut Through Parking Lots in Michigan?
We've all been there- stuck at one of Michigan's long traffic lights, late for work, and watching the precious minutes tick away. You glance up, and your eyes rest upon the parking lot entrance on your right, and you think, "What's the harm? It's just a shortcut, right?" Well, before you hit the gas and cut through the lot to avoid a long light, construction, or other delays, let's talk legality.

That trip through the lot may save you a few minutes and even put you back on schedule, but could it result in a considerable fine if caught?
Is Cutting Through a Parking Lot in Michigan Ilegal?
Short answer? Yep. It's illegal. According to the Clark Law Office and Michigan Vehicle Code, state law says you can't drive through private or public property (looking at you, gas stations, and Subway parking lots) to avoid a traffic control device, like a red light.
So, if you're thinking about making a quick escape through a parking lot to dodge construction or that slow-moving semi, think again--unless you're a fan of civil infractions.
Why Cutting Through Parking Lots Illegal
What's the big fuss, right? Well, Michigan law takes this pretty seriously, and for good reasons. First, people speeding through parking lots pose a danger to unsuspecting pedestrians (and shopping carts), who assume cars are moving much slower. Plus, you're risking a fender bender or worse, which isn't worth those two minutes you were looking to save.

If caught cutting through a parking lot in Michigan, you'll be charged a civil infraction, a $135 or $175 fine, according to MLive (the fine is higher in construction and school zones), and two points on your driver's license. Instead of cutting through a parking lot, bite the bullet, show up late, and leave earlier next time.
