Flushing Police Set to Receive Over $200K in Federal Funding
A huge public safety upgrade is coming to Mid-Michigan. More than $200,000 in federal funding is on its way to the Flushing Police Department, and it is money going directly toward equipment the department uses every day.
U.S. Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet announced the funding today, according to MLive, while touring the Flushing Public Works Department. The final grant amount has not yet been finalized, but Police Chief Steve Colosky expects the department to receive the funds soon.
Federal Funding Targets Patrol Vehicles and Essential Equipment
That investment will be used to purchase two patrol vehicles, along with safety equipment, radios, and other gear. Colosky said that a patrol vehicle costs about $53,000, with another $18,000 needed to fully outfit it for police work.
School Resource Officer Program Also Supported
The funding will also support Flushing’s school resource officer program, which currently places one full-time officer in each public school building throughout the district. Colosky say:
We operate under a general fund, so this greatly helps us. This allows the department to upgrade equipment without placing any financial strain on our citizens.

McDonald Rivet said the funding is focused on officer safety and making sure departments have what they need to do the job. She said:
Every day our local police officers are risking their lives to keep us safe. We need to do everything we can to make sure that they are safe.
The funding was secured through the fiscal year 2026 Community Project Funding Initiative.

McDonald Rivet and Colosky were joined at the announcement by Flushing City Manager Michelle King, Mayor Pro Tem Dane Miller, and state Rep. Jasper Martus of Flushing.
Chief Colosky then said:
For every piece of equipment purchased, there is a family, neighbor, and community who will feel more secure.
