Iconic Michigan Gas Station Changing Its Name Statewide in 2025 – Why?
Even with just 8 locations in Michigan, this iconic gas station is changing its name—and fans aren’t happy about it.
Some customers weren’t happy when they found out earlier this year that the popular Kum & Go gas station/convenience store chain would be changing its funny yet controversial name. Kum & Go is relatively new to Michigan, but the company has been going strong since its founding in 1959. At the time, it was called Hampton Oil Co.

What Is Kum & Go Changing Its Name To?
At some point in 2025, Kum & Go will change its name to Maverik. I know, it’s not nearly as fun as Kum & Go.
When founder Bill Krause and his father-in-law T.S. Gentle came up with the name in the 70s, humor was not their intention. The "K" stood for Krause and the "G" stood for Gentle.
