Oh boy, here we go again. The Mackinac Bridge was shut down earlier today thanks to a high-speed police chase that started up in Chippewa County and ended in St. Ignace.

According to the Straits Area Scanner, the chase kicked off around 9 a.m. with reports that the suspect had mental health issues and weapons registered to him. At one point, he hit speeds over 100 mph, weaving around cars, blowing past stop sticks, and even jumping on and off I-75. The suspect was driving a stolen white Chevy Equinox, and for a short time, police even lost track of him in St. Ignace. By 9:33 a.m., he was finally taken into custody.

If this feels like déjà vu, that’s because it pretty much is. Just last month, on August 12, a driver skipped out on the toll and led cops on a chase that shut the bridge down. Traffic came to a standstill, the guy got busted, and charges followed.

It just goes to show how fast things can flip on the bridge. Thousands of cars cross it every day, and it only takes one moron driver to screw it up for everyone. Traffic’s back to normal now, but you know the folks stuck waiting this morning weren’t exactly thrilled. Just scroll through the comments on the Straits Area Scanner page and you’ll see exactly what I mean.
