Warning: Don’t Deposit Mail in Michigan’s Blue Drop Boxes
Being told not to put mail in one of Michigan's many blue drop boxes may seem like an odd request, especially since that's exactly what they're made for and have been a trusted part of the postal system for decades. However, you may want to think twice before dropping anything of value into one.
Over the years, you may have noticed fewer blue drop boxes throughout the state. Blue mailboxes used to be in super convenient spots, making it easy for people to drop off their mail. But with more people texting and emailing these days, not as many are actually using them anymore. This is why the USPS has been gradually removing them, especially in areas where the drop boxes are used less.
Strangely enough, the USPS is warning against residents using their blue drop boxes. The number one reason is theft.

The rise of identity theft has criminals not only targeting you online but also through your mail. Thieves often break into the boxes or use tools like fishing lines with sticky substances to pull out mail. The goal is usually to steal checks, credit card information, or other sensitive documents that can be used for identity theft or fraud.
According to the USPS, you should avoid using their blue drop boxes on weekends and on holidays. Unlike during the week, the mailboxes are not checked by mail personnel.
If you do have something that you need to mail on the weekend or during a holiday, use the blue drop box in front of your local post office. This is a safer bet as they have security cameras installed near or under them for more safety measures.
Whatever you do, avoid sending checks through the mail if at all possible. I know it’s a big ask for older folks who are set in their ways. Trust me, I know; I’ve been trying to convince my parents to stop doing it for years.
