McDonald’s Workers in Flint Plan to Strike on Tuesday

To support a $15 an hour minimum wage, some workers in Flint are planning to strike tomorrow.

Starting tomorrow, (Tuesday, February 16th, 2021) many workers plan to walk off the job to demand a higher pay wage. The workers at McDonald's at 3212 Clio Road in Flint aim to support the $15 per hour minimum wage effort. The event itself is being organized by the national Fight for $15 and a Union group.

Right now, Congress is in talks of a gradual national minimum wage increase to $15 per hour under President Joe Biden's COVID-19 relief bill. While the workers in Flint plan to strike tomorrow, other similar events will be taking place nationwide as well. Other strikes are planned in Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Houston, Miami, Milwaukee, St. Louis, and several other cities.

Currently, the federal minimum wage sits at $7.25 per hour. In Michigan, the current minimum wage is $9.65 per hour. The organizers at Fight for $15 and the union organization say that the increase would force a pay raise for 59% of working families working below the poverty line.

Passing a $15 an hour minimum wage is a moral imperative — it’s what we must do to help working people put food on the table, pay rent and support their families...Only by addressing the problems in our economy that have left workers on a razor’s edge can we build back better from our current crisis...said Service Employees International Union President Mary Kay Henry.
