MI Has the Only Highway in the US That Has Banned Motor Vehicles

It may sound crazy, but you did read that right. There is a state highway in Michigan that has banned the use of motor vehicles on it. It is also the only one in the United States that has done that.

So what highway is it? M-185 on Mackinac Island. M-185 is a legitimate state trunkline highway, but it has quite a few quirks to it. The most obvious is that M-185 is the only state highway in the nation that has banned the use of motor vehicles while traveling it. Also, as it is on Mackinac Island, it does not connect to other Michigan state trunkline highways.

When you take your next trip to Mackinac Island, you will also hear this highway referred to as Main Street. M-185 is 8.004 miles long and completely circles the island. While traveling this stretch, visitors will see several sites along the way including Fort Mackinac, Arch Rock, British Landing, Devil's Kitchen, and more.

How do you use a highway if motor vehicles are banned? Well, on Mackinac Island, visitors can travel the eight-mile stretch on foot, horseback, horse-drawn vehicles, and bicycles.

Another fun fact about M-185 is that until 2005, it held the record of being the only state highway to be free of any automobile accidents. As only official vehicles are allowed on the island, the accident was between the island's fire truck and ambulance. Both those vehicles were responding to a call about an injured passenger on the Shepler ferry that needed medical attention.
