It's always pretty cool to see your city or state at the top of a list that praises where you live. It's not so cool when that list refers to your city as being the worst place to live.

The last thing you want to hear is that your city has the lowest quality of life in the United States. Unfortunately, that's exactly what we're discussing today, as two Michigan cities recently topped the list of the lowest quality of life cities in America.

LawnStarter compared 500 of the largest cities in the United States and, based on 16 categories, ranked the Leading Cities for Quality of Life in 2024.

The company took the cities that came in at 499 and 500 and flipped the list around to also rank the top cities with the lowest quality of life in the U.S. So, if you live in one of Michigan's smaller cities, you're in the clear regarding this ranking.

Before we get to the rankings, I want to clarify that these rankings are from LawnStarter, not from me. This is not an opinion piece; it is based on a study conducted by LawnStarter. Okay, now that we got that out of the way, let's look at the rankings.

What Michigan Cities Have the Lowest Quality of Life in the U.S.?

Flint, MI (ranked No. 500) and Detroit, MI (ranked No. 499) offer the lowest quality of life, facing significant challenges in family and food security, economic stability, housing, and infrastructure.

Lowest Quality of Life in the U.S.

1. Flint, Michigan
2. Detroit, Michigan
3. Pharr, Texas
4. Pasadena, Texas
5. Brownsville, Texas

Highest Quality of Life in the U.S.

1. Redmond, Washington
2. Newton, Massachusetts
3. Woodbury, Minnesota
4. Bellevue, Washington

Since I work in Flint and live nearby, I have to disagree with this study. I think Flint is a great place to live and work.

You can check out the full study on their website, including the company's methodology.
