Why This Michigan College Is Willing to Pay Graduates $2,000
How many times have we heard horror stories about people graduating from college only to be stuck working a job that has absolutely nothing to do with their degree, or not finding a job at all?
It’s one of the biggest fears students and parents have when it comes to college. You spend four years, rack up debt, and then… now what? That’s honestly why I think more kids should be looking at the trades, but that’s a whole other conversation.
And that’s where Central Michigan University comes into this.

What Is the Central Career Guarantee?
Starting in fall 2026, CMU plans to launch the Central Career Guarantee. According to MLive, if you graduate and don’t land a job or get into grad school within six months, the university backs that promise with money.
Eligible grads would receive $2,000 if things don’t pan out right away. No, it’s not wiping out tens of thousands in student loan debt, but when you’re fresh out of college, $2K is still $2K.
The money can be used for student loan payments, job hunting, grad school applications, or whatever helps you get through that awkward post-college stretch. CMU says this would make them the first public university in Michigan to offer a guarantee like this.

Who Qualifies for the $2,000 Career Guarantee?
There are some strings attached, as expected. Students have to opt in and actually participate, including meeting with advisors and taking part in career development activities. This isn’t a free check just for graduating.
CMU says about 94.3 percent of its grads already land on their feet, so this is more of a safety net than anything else.
