Michigan Has More People on Food Stamps Than Students in Public School

According to recent statistics, Michigan now has more people receiving food stamps than it does students attending public school.

State officials announced earlier this month that it would begin testing certain welfare recipients for drug use in a pilot effort to gain some control over the 1,679,421 people currently on food stamps. As it stands, that number is now well above the state’s student enrollment in K-12, which comes in at 1,564,114.

Some believe that drug testing welfare recipients violates civil rights and should not be employed. Yet, Michigan, not unlike many other states, remains in a constant battle with those who abuse the program and defraud the state – and its taxpayers. In fact, Michigan food stamp recipients cost taxpayers a whopping $2,576,165,148 in 2014.
