A last-minute Michigan Lottery ticket purchase paid off big for a 58-year-old Wayne County man, who won $500,000.

The man, like most lottery winners, has chosen to remain anonymous. He purchased the winning Emerald 7s instant ticket at Kroger on West 14 Mile Road in Commerce Township.

The lucky winner shared the following with Michigan Lottery Connect,

I was on my way out of the store because they were closing soon, and I stopped at the lottery machine to buy a few tickets before I left. A worker walked up to the machine to shut it down, so I quickly bought a few tickets, scratched the barcodes, and then scanned them at the machine to check them.

Am I the only person who still takes their lottery tickets home to scratch? I never scan them right away because I don’t want to be instantly disappointed if I don’t win.

Upon scanning one of his tickets, he received a message instructing him to file a claim. A store employee suggested that he must have won big - and he certainly did. The excited player then grabbed his phone and scanned the ticket using the Michigan Lottery app.

As soon as I scanned it, she asked what was wrong because of the look on my face, so I told her I’d won $50,000. I looked down at my phone again and that’s when I realized it actually said $500,000! I had to go sit in my car and try to calm down because I was so excited and worked up that I couldn’t drive home. It was crazy!

So naturally, the next question is: what will one of Michigan’s most recent lottery winners do with his winnings? The plan is to pay off all of his bills and decide what to do with the rest later.
