Michigan recently confirmed the first cases of measles in the state since 2019. According to WDIV, a child in Oakland County linked to international travel has measles. While the virus is highly contagious, officials don't believe anyone outside of the child’s home was exposed to the virus.

The last time there was a measles outbreak was in 2019. That year there were 46 cases confirmed across the state.

Health officials say the best way to protect yourself is to get vaccinated. Yes, the big scary V word. Even though vaccine skepticism was an issue before the pandemic, it sure ramped up after that. They say that 90% of unvaccinated people who are exposed to measles will become infected.

Symptoms of Measles

  • High fever (may spike to over 104˚F).
  • Cough.
  • Runny nose.
  • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis).

Two or three days after the symptoms occur you'll see tiny white spots on the inner cheeks, gums, and roof of the mouth.

Three to five days after symptoms occur you'll see a red blotchy rash that usually starts on the face, and then spreads to the trunk, arms, and legs.
