Two words you rarely hear in 2026: general store.

Maybe that’s why a Love Food article caught my eye - it listed the oldest general stores in the United States. Of course, I couldn’t help wondering if any of them were in Michigan.

Sure, there are small-town stores all across Michigan, but I never hear anyone call them ‘general stores’. Even when visiting up north, the term doesn’t seem to be part of modern conversation.

To my surprise, general stores are still a thing, and towns that are home to them seem to be quite proud of that fact.

One Michigan spot makes an appearance on the list of the oldest general stores in the United States. The store is located in Good Hart.

Full disclosure, I have never heard of Good Hart, Michigan. Located in Emmett County along the Lake Michigan shoreline, Good Hart is a popular spot for anyone enjoying the 'tunnel of trees' road tour.

The store getting national attention is the Good Hart General Store. According to Love Food, the building itself dates back to the 1930s.

Today the store sells everything from books to Michigan-made gifts, but it's the food that keeps people coming back. The warming pot pies have been sold since 1986, while the cookies have a diehard local fanbase.

As you will see in the video below, the store is unique, and the food looks absolutely incredible. Especially, the pot pies as mentioned above.

Have you visited the Good Hart General Store in Michigan? If so, feel free to share your thoughts on this very special place.
