It seems like we've been seeing a lot of news articles lately talking about Michigan workers moving to a four-day workweek. Is this something that could happen, or is it just a bunch of talk and wishful thinking?

A five-day eight-hour full-time work schedule has been the standard in Michigan for decades. Sure, some people have different schedules, but the traditional workweek remains the norm for most workers in the state.

There have been rumblings about more and more companies talking about moving to either a 32-hour work week or having workers do four 10-hour shifts, Monday through Thursday. Yes, some companies are already doing this. In fact, my wife works four 10-hour shifts and then enjoys having a three-day weekend (I'm so jealous).

While there's been some research on the idea of a four-day workweek, it's just not enough to make a definitive case for widespread implementation.

According to ABC News, during a 2022 study, 100% of participating companies' managers and CEOs reported that the four-day week had a "positive" or "very positive" impact on their organization.

When researchers inquired about the effects of the four-day structure, 82% of surveyed companies reported positive impacts on staff well-being. Additionally, 50% observed a reduction in staff turnover, and 32% noted noticeable improvements in recruitment.

Studies have shown that a 4 day work week increases employee satisfaction, company commitment, and teamwork. Not to mention a decrease in stress levels.
The concept may seem a little radical to some, but that's also how people felt in 1926 when Henry Ford's Ford Motor Company implemented the five-day workweek in the United States. There were earlier instances of shorter workweeks being implemented in different industries, but most of the credit usually goes to Ford. That was nearly 100 years ago; it might be time to make a change.
