Michigan Wants to Increase Speed Limit to 80 MPH
They can’t drive 55… Michigan lawmakers are attempting once again to pass a measure to increase the speed limit on some roads. According to a report from CBS Detroit, a proposal was introduced earlier this week aimed at increasing the speed limit to 80mph along specific Michigan expressways in an effort to bring to life a concept known as rural freeways.
Representative Brad Jacobson, sponsor of this legislation, says in addition to raising the speed limit, the bill would also prevent motorists from receiving citations for 5 mph over the limit. The fabled “5 your fine, 10 your mine” rule among state troopers would become a reality.
Unfortunately, there is not much hope of this measure passing during the upcoming legislative session, said WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Time Skubick. “If you like to put the pedal to the metal and speed just a little bit, don’t get too excited yet because this bill may not pass,” he said. “It’s been introduced in the lame duck session.”
If this legislation passes, Michigan will have one of the highest speed limits in the United States, second only to parts of Texas where it reaches 85 miles per hour.
