The Michigan Tech Winter Carnival in Houghton Celebrates Its 100th Year
A celebration of winter returns to Houghton in February with the 100th annual Michigan Tech Winter Carnival.
Winter Carnival started way back in 1922 and has grown into one of the biggest and longest running annual winter celebrations in the state of Michigan. This year the event is expected to be bigger than ever as they celebrate 100 years of outdoor winter fun.
The event is know for its for huge, intricate snow statues that will be on display around campus and around the community. Some of the snow statues stand nearly 30 feet high and take more than 1,000 work hours to build. They even pump the music through giant snow speakers...for real.
They also offer some unique and fun events that most winter festivals in Michigan don't have.
What Kind of Special Events Take Place at Winter Carnival?
If you make your way to Houghton this year for Winter Carnival 2022, you'll find a bunch of really cool events including:

- Cross Country Skiing
- Curling
- Downhill Skiing
- Downhill Snowboarding
- Human Dog Sled Races
- Ice Bowling
- Snow Soccer
- Ice Skating
- Snow Volleyball
- Tug of War

When is the Winter Carnival in Houghton?
This year's Winter Carnival will take place February 9 - 12th.
If you're thinking about making your way there this, it's probably best to plan on staying for a few days because it's a heck of a hike if you're traveling from downstate. It takes roughly 8 hours to get there from the Genesee County area.
