Midland’s Iconic Tridge Will Be Replaced After 45 Years
If you’ve spent any time in Midland, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve walked across the Tridge or at least seen it. It’s one of those landmarks that feels like it has always been there. It’s a Midland staple for sure.
Unfortunately, after nearly 45 years of brutal Michigan weather, flooding, and thousands of people walking across it, the Tridge is nearing the end of its lifespan.
Why Does the Midland Tridge Need to Be Replaced?
According to ABC12, a recent assessment found some structural issues, and it sounds like the city can’t put this off much longer.

The wooden bridge was built in 1981, and apparently, bridges like this only last around 50 years in Michigan’s climate. So, like it or not, Midland has reached the point where something needs to be done.
The good news is they aren’t just tearing it down and calling it a day.
Midland Plans to Build a New Tridge
The plan is to replace the Tridge with something new that will hopefully last for decades without losing the look and character people love.
City officials are bringing in consultants to look at everything from the design and foundation to the piers and overall cost. There’s no price tag yet because they still have a lot to figure out.
Construction is expected to begin sometime in 2028.
I’ve always thought the Tridge was one of the coolest and most unique bridges I’ve ever seen. It’ll definitely be strange seeing the original one go, but at least the city understands how much it means to Midland and plans to keep the spirit of it alive.
