If you've been following the heartbreaking story of 12-year-old Olivia Smith, there's still one big question nobody seems to have the answer to: What actually happened?

If you haven't been following it, here's the quick version.

According to ABC12, Olivia died Tuesday night after collapsing outside a friend's home in Bay County's Kawkawlin Township. At first, dispatchers were told she had run face-first into a tree. But now, even the Bay County medical examiner says this case isn't that simple.

Ring camera video reportedly shows Olivia sitting on the front porch around 9:15 p.m. before getting up and walking toward a wooded area. Just six minutes later, someone called 911 saying the 12-year-old had run into a tree and was unconscious. She later died at the hospital.

Why Olivia Smith's Family Doesn't Believe the Original Story

That's where things take another turn.

Olivia's family says they don't believe she ran into a tree. They also say they have information they can't release while the investigation is ongoing and are asking anyone who witnessed what happened or has video from that night to come forward.

Investigators have also received conflicting witness accounts about whether Olivia was being chased before she collapsed. They haven't confirmed those reports, but it's easy to see why so many people are wondering what really happened.

Why Olivia Smith's Cause of Death Is Still Unknown

The Bay County medical examiner says this isn't a typical case, and there's still a lot they need to figure out before reaching any conclusions.

A family member also said Olivia had a heart condition, but investigators haven't said whether that played any role.

The investigation is still active, and the full autopsy results aren't expected for about eight weeks.

Until then, this whole thing just feels really strange. Between the surveillance video, conflicting witness accounts, the family's statement, and a medical examiner who says more testing is needed, there are still far more questions than answers.

I hope the family gets those answers soon.
