A train derailed in Owosso, leaving multiple railcars overturned and a pretty big mess behind.

Train Derailment Overturns Six Railcars in Owosso

According to WNEM, up to six railcars overturned during the derailment.

The cars blocked several intersections, including Main Street, which is also M-21, along with Cedar Street and Chipman Street.

If you happened to drive through that area early Thursday, you probably had no idea why you were suddenly being turned around.

Thankfully, the overturned railcars weren’t carrying anything dangerous. They were loaded with soybeans, and the city said there were no hazardous materials involved. I guess if you’re going to derail a train, soybeans are a pretty decent best-case scenario. What a mess, though.

Roads Reopen After Owosso Train Derailment

First responders, railroad workers, and cleanup crews worked together to remove the railcars and clean up the spilled soybeans.

Good news. All of the affected intersections have since reopened.

The city hasn’t said what caused the train to derail.

This situation could have been a whole lot worse. Thankfully, the biggest problems appear to have been a traffic headache and more soybeans than anyone knew what to do with.
