Last week we had no idea who the woman was that was injured at Cedar Point after a metal object flew off the Top Thrill Dragster Ride and hit her in the head. Well, now we know it was a woman from right here in our backyard.

The woman has been identified as 44-year-old Rachel Hawes from Swartz Creek.

Hawes was waiting in line for the ride when an L-shaped metal bracket (the size of a man's hand) dislodged and hit her in the head on Aug. 15. She was rushed to a hospital in Ohio, where she remains in critical condition.

Cedar Point:

Our team has the health and welfare of our guest who was involved in Sunday’s incident at Top Thrill Dragster at the forefront of our minds. We will continue to offer our support to her and her family in this unimaginably difficult time.

We want to fully understand what happened and why. Together with the Ohio Dept. of Agriculture’s Division of Amusement Ride Safety & Fairs, third party investigators, engineers and the ride’s manufacturer, we are being careful, methodical and thorough. We will not rush the investigation and will work tirelessly in our search for answers in the interest of improving safety.

Due to the seriousness of what happened, Cedar Point will keep Top Thrill Dragster Closed for the remainder of the year.

We're still not 100% on the severity of the woman's injury but according to News 5, the family says she is fighting for her life.

We want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during this time. [She] is fighting for her life, and we would ask for privacy in this difficult time.
