Have You Seen the Phallic Shaped Water Tower in Ypsilanti, MI?
The Ypsilanti Water Tower has become famous for its shape alone.
Pretty much all Eastern Michigan University students know exactly what you are talking about when you mention "The Brick D**k." That is the nickname of the Ypsilanti Water Tower on Washtenaw Avenue. The Queen Anne-style structure was built in 1890 and has gained quite a reputation for its shape.
The tower itself is made of Joliet limestone and can hold 250,000 gallons of water in its steel tank. The structure itself is 147 feet tall with an 85-foot base. On the front lawn of the water tower, you will find a bust made out of marble of a hero of Greek independence, Demetrius Ypsilanti, for who the city is named after.
The most famous thing in Ypsilanti is this water tower made out of brick, about 175 years old. It looks like this big penis...Iggy Pop, 1996
Not only is the Ypsilanti Water Tower used as a point of reference when giving directions to those unfamiliar with the area, but it also has a pretty funny urban legend behind it. The urban legend states that if a virgin ever graduates from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, the tower will crumble to the ground. I don't care who you are, that is pretty damn funny.
"The Brick D**k" has also garnered attention and fame from comedians passing through the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti area. What comedian could resist spending a few minutes during their set to talk about it? The Ypsilanti Water Tower also gained fame in 2003 when Cabinet magazine named it the World's Most Phallic Building.
