Back in December I put together a list of the five movies I was most excited for this year, the upcoming prequel to John Carpenter's ass kicking 1982 alien flick could be the coolest horror film of the year. The Thing (2011) is set to hit theaters in October and we have the trailer, but can the movie be as good without John Carpenter, Kurt Russell, or Quaker Oats/Diabeetus guy Wilford Brimley?

The Thing (1982) was an awesome 80's sci-fi/horror movie, one of the definite stand-outs of the decade. Cool story, bad-ass characters like Russell's R.J. MacReady, and incredible special effects (which still look kind of cool today). Can the new movie deliver on any of those fronts?

The Thing (2011) stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, Live Free or Die Hard) and takes place in the days leading up to the events of the 1982 version.  At the beginning of the previous installment there was a helicopter that with Norwegians that are chasing a dog near the Antarctica research facility. They crash, the dog mutates...you get the idea. The preview for the prequel looks to be an era appropriate explanation as to where that dog came from.

After seeing the trailer I would say there are two things working against the movie: No Kurt Russell (although Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, better known as Mr. Eko from 'Lost', can play tough guy also), it looks similar to the Carpenter version, and the awesome creature effects will be replaced by CG this time out (okay that's three things).

How do you think this will stack up against the original?
