Something finally changed in Tuscola County this week, and yeah, it sounds like it was a long time coming.

For months now, residents have been showing up to county meetings fed up about the same dangerous intersections and the same kinds of crashes happening over and over. This week, commissioners finally said yes to some actual fixes. The road commission has been told to start adding rumble strips and flashing stop lights in spots where accidents just keep stacking up.

Which honestly feels like a no-brainer.

Why Tuscola County Roads Have Become a Safety Concern

This didn’t come out of nowhere either. According to ABC 12, people have been begging for action after a string of serious crashes, including a devastating one in Ellington Township back in September that killed three members of the Putman family. Since then, the message from the community has been pretty simple. How many crashes does it take before something changes?

Yeah, some folks say it’s not the roads, it’s the drivers. And sure, that’s part of it. But you can’t babysit every person behind the wheel. You can, however, make it harder to blow through a stop sign without noticing.

That’s where rumble strips and flashing lights come in.

Which Tuscola County Intersections Are Getting Safety Upgrades

Several high-risk intersections are now slated for upgrades, including Hurds Corner, Birch Run Road, Fairgrove Road, and a few others locals already know to slow down for.

The road commission still has to figure out the money side of it and the timeline, and they’ll be reporting back later this month and again in January. So no, this isn’t finished yet. At least it's moving in the right direction.
