You expect a baseball player to get banged up every once in a while; it happens. Sliding into a piece of exposed metal while chasing a foul ball? That’s a different story.

Athletics player Zack Gelof is suing the Detroit Tigers over an injury he suffered at Comerica Park on July 9. He was going after a ball near the left field wall when he slid into a fence and struck his right knee.

According to Fox 2 Detroit, the metal ripped through Gelof’s uniform and cut his knee pretty badly. It missed the tendon just below his kneecap, but he still had to leave the game and says he was out for 30 days.

Gelof says the fence was too close to the field and didn’t have enough padding. Players are going to slide over there trying to make a catch. The lawsuit says padding was added to that same spot after he got hurt, which makes sense. Somebody gets hurt, you fix the problem.

Who Is Zack Gelof Suing Over His Comerica Park Injury?

Gelof filed the lawsuit Monday against the Tigers, Ilitch Holdings, and the Detroit-Wayne County Stadium Authority.

Players make those all-out catches every night. His argument is that this particular spot at Comerica Park made one of them a lot more dangerous than it needed to be.

A lot of people are calling Gelof a big baby for suing, and honestly, I kind of get where they’re coming from. It was a nasty accident, and maybe some padding could’ve prevented it. But a lawsuit? Come on.

Then again, it’s easy for me to say. I’m not the one who got hurt.
