Michigan City Just Banned Gas Leaf Blowers for the Summer
If you fired up a gas-powered leaf blower in one Michigan city this week, you could end up with a fine. As ridiculous as that may sound to some people, it's absolutely real.
As of June 1, Ann Arbor's seasonal ban on gas-powered leaf blowers is back in effect. So if you're planning to clear off the driveway or tidy up the yard with a gas blower, you might want to think twice. The city prohibits their use through September 30 and plans to phase them out completely in the coming years.

Why Are Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers Banned in Ann Arbor?
Ann Arbor officials say gas-powered leaf blowers are noisy, create air pollution, and produce emissions they believe can have negative health effects. The ban is their way of trying to tackle all three.
You Can Be Fined for Using a Gas-Powered Leaf Blower in Ann Arbor
If you're caught using a gas-powered leaf blower during the ban, the first violation can cost you at least $100. Get caught again, and that fine jumps to at least $250. I don't know why, but this all just seems so crazy and over the top to me.
Now, there are a few exceptions. The city still allows gas-powered leaf blowers during emergencies, disaster cleanup efforts, and certain construction projects.
Ann Arbor Plans to Ban Gas-Powered Leaf Blowers Completely
For now, gas-powered leaf blowers are still allowed in Ann Arbor from October 1 through May 30. However, that changes on January 1, 2028, when a full year-round ban takes effect.
Electric leaf blowers will still be allowed. While gas-powered leaf blowers are loud and annoying, I don't think there should ever be a total ban.

Ann Arbor appears to be the only Michigan city with an active gas-powered leaf blower ban. Birmingham has discussed similar restrictions, but a citywide ban has not been implemented.
This isn't some brand new idea. Ann Arbor started rolling out the restrictions in 2024 and has been slowly moving toward a full ban ever since.
