Ann Arbor Schools Will Be Closed Next Week Due to Staff Shortages

Ann Arbor public schools announced this week that they will be closed all next week due to staff shortages and an increase in COVID-19 cases.

Earlier this month Ann Arbor school announced that they were moving to a remote learning day, due to numerous unfilled positions and an inability to fully staff the school for in-person learning. For those same exact reasons, kids will also get an extended Thanksgiving vacation next week.

It's only a couple of extra days off but it's a trend that we're starting to see all over the state including Swartz Creek Schools who made the same announcement earlier this week as well.

Superintendent Jeanice Swift:

As a COVID mitigation step to interrupt transmission and allow sick individuals to recuperate, we will amend the AAPS school schedule for next week, providing Monday and Tuesday, November 22nd and 23rd, as an extension to the traditional Thanksgiving school break.

Their original plan was to keep Ann Arbor Schools open next week but after a spike in COVID cases that option was pretty much impossible. According to WDIV, the spike is impacting all areas of operations, including classrooms, school buildings, food service, transportation and custodial.

Just last week several schools districts like Stockbridge Community Schools and Columbia Schools in Jackson County closed due to staffing shortages and COVID-19. It's an ongoing problem that isn't going to end anytime soon.
