If you’ve never had “psychedelic mushroom festival” on your Michigan weekend plans, well, here’s your shot.

The sixth annual Entheofest returns to the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor this Sunday, September 20. Before you start picturing people eating mushrooms and talking to trees, that’s not exactly what this event is.

So, what exactly is Entheofest? Basically, it’s a free event centered around psychedelic plants and mushrooms. The whole idea is to educate people, talk about using them more safely, and push for changes to Michigan’s laws.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday on the Diag. It won’t cost you anything to attend, and you don’t need a ticket or registration. You do, however, need to be at least 18.

There will be live music, speakers, and educational tables covering everything from psychedelic reform to mushrooms and harm reduction.

The Psychedelic Mushroom Talk Continues After Entheofest

After the main event wraps up, things will move over to the Michigan League for a couple of panel discussions starting at 2:30 p.m. They’ll talk about building communities around psychedelic plants and mushrooms, along with ways to reduce the risks that come with using them.

Just to be clear, this isn’t some farmers market for magic mushrooms. Nothing will be sold at the event, and organizers are asking people not to show up trying to sell anything, either.

Ann Arbor became the first city in Michigan to decriminalize psychedelic plants and mushrooms back in 2020. Washtenaw County followed with a similar policy the next year.

Now, that doesn’t mean you can legally walk around Ann Arbor with a bag of magic mushrooms. Psilocybin is still illegal under Michigan and federal law. It simply means personal possession and use aren’t a major priority for local law enforcement.
