More Cameras Coming to Flint and Not Everyone’s Going to Love It
If all goes according to plan, Flint’s about to get a lot more eyes on the streets.
According to ABC12, the city’s Finance Committee just voted in favor of expanding its camera network, which could add 36 new cameras around the city if approved by the full council.
Right now, Flint has 62 cameras keeping an eye on the area. The new ones will be paid for through a mix of federal grant money and the city’s police services budget.

These aren’t your basic cameras either. They’re set up along public roads and can catch the back of vehicles as they drive by, including the license plates.
Wait, Aren’t Cameras Illegal in Michigan?
Now, before anyone freaks out, this isn’t one of those red light or speed camera setups. Those are actually illegal in Michigan. State law doesn’t allow cameras to automatically ticket drivers, so Flint’s system isn’t doing that. These cameras are license plate readers, and they’re used strictly to help police track down suspects, stolen cars, or other criminal activity.
The only people who should have a problem with these cameras are the criminals.
Sixth Ward Councilwoman Tonya Burns told ABC12 she’s all for it. With fewer officers on the streets than in past years, around 250 now compared to about 400 before, these cameras basically act as an extra set of eyes and ears for law enforcement.
Tonya Burns:
They help solve crimes, they help keep businesses safe.
The proposal will now move to the full Flint City Council for approval.
