GM Adds Robots to Michigan Plant Months After 1,000+ Job Cuts

Regardless of whether you work in the auto industry or not, this is the kind of story that makes people a little uneasy.

General Motors has added around 50 “collaborative robots,” also known as cobots, to the assembly line at its Factory Zero plant in Detroit, just months after more than 1,000 workers were laid off at the same facility.

And yeah…you can probably guess how union workers feel about that.

Why Did GM Add Robots to Its Michigan Plant?

According to the New York Post, GM says these robots aren’t being brought in to replace workers. The company says the cobots are mainly there to help with some of the more physically demanding jobs on the assembly line while also improving safety.

That all sounds fine and dandy in theory, but after more than 1,000 layoffs, you can probably understand why a lot of workers hear that and think, “Yeah… okay.”

Look, robots aren’t exactly new at General Motors or in the auto industry. They’ve been part of manufacturing for years.

But as automation and AI keep getting more advanced, more people are starting to wonder where this all leads.
