General Motors is getting ready to sink some serious money into the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant along with quite a few jobs.

According to an announcement today, General Motors will be providing around 2,200 jobs as the plant turns into the company's first all-electric vehicle plant. The retooling process is set to begin at D-Ham on February 28th of this year and will take about 18 months.

After the changes have been made, the plant will begin to crank out the all-electric Cruise Origin shuttle beginning in late 2021. The Cruise Origin is a self-driving shuttle with no steering wheel or gas pedal that will be used in ride-sharing on an all-electric platform that GM is going to build.

Back in December, workers were given notice that the company would lay off 814 hourly and salaried employees on February 28th ahead of the plant's pricy overhaul. The UAW and General Motors suggested that the workers could be transferred to Fort Wayne or Flint Assembly.
