Well, we might have some bad news for those who love crafting, sewing, and everything DIY—your go-to craft and fabric store in Michigan could be at risk of closing soon.

Back in March of 2024, we got word that Joann Fabric, the go-to spot for all things crafting, sewing, and DIY, was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Sure, that didn’t mean they were closing stores right away, but it definitely left fans wondering if their favorite spot might be in trouble. Fast forward 10 months, and here we are—some locations are officially set to close.

Does this mean Joann Fabric is near the end of its run after more than 75 years in business? According to the company, not quite. They say the closures are simply part of a routine evaluation and optimization of store locations, not a sign of a major shutdown.

While the company may claim everything’s fine in fabric land, we’ve seen this story play out time and time again over the past few years. Companies always say things are great, then start quietly closing a few stores here and there before eventually announcing more and more. We know how the story ends.

How Many Joann Fabric Stores Are Closing?

According to USA Today, at least eight stores across Iowa, North Carolina, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts are closing their doors for good.

Michigan customers can breathe a sigh of relief as no store closures have been announced in the state—at least, not yet.
