A bill has passed in the Michigan House of Representatives to allow Michigan residents to carry and use stun guns.

On Tuesday, the bill passed through the house and will move on to the Senate for consideration. While many people are uncomfortable carrying a firearm, this bill is meant to provide residents with the ability to carry a non-lethal self-defense weapon for protection.

Stun guns have been completely banned in Michigan, but a Court of Appeals ruling several years ago stated that the ban on private possession of stun guns violates the Second Amendment and the Michigan Constitution. After state laws were revised, residents with a concealed pistol license were allowed to carry a taser, but stun guns remained illegal to possess.

To clarify, stun guns require direct contact with a person's skin to work, while tasers fire electric probes and penetrate the target's skin.

If the bill passes through the Senate, it would then need to be signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
