Michigan hasn't experienced a measles outbreak since 2019, when 46 cases were confirmed across the state. While things aren't quite as severe this year, the number of cases is increasing.

Earlier this year, we reported on the first measles case of 2024 in the state. In that case, a child in Oakland County was linked to international travel and had contracted measles. Now, eight months into the year, we are seeing a seventh case reported.

According to WDIV, an adult in Wayne County has tested positive for measles after traveling internationally. While there aren't many details, we do know that this individual is following isolation protocols and that possible contacts are being notified.

Individuals who were present at the following locations during specific times may have been exposed to the virus:

Symptoms of Measles

  • High fever (may spike to over 104˚F).
  • Cough.
  • Runny nose.
  • Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis).

Two to three days after symptoms appear, tiny white spots may develop on the mouth's inner cheeks, gums, and roof.

Three to five days after symptoms appear, a red blotchy rash typically starts on the face and then spreads to the trunk, arms, and legs.

We're not here to have the great vaccination debate, but experts say the best way to protect yourself from the virus is to get vaccinated.
