Lawn Job – Michigan Men Recreate Detroit Lions Playing Field

Two Woodhaven, Michigan friends have created a Detroit Lions field of dreams.

Brad Smith and Jared Blair collaborated to create an exact 1/10 scale replica of the Detroit Lions' actual playing field.

As soon as I saw the photos of the field on social media, I knew I had to contact the guys to learn more about this amazing project.

The replica is located in Brad Smith's yard, and he graciously provided me with the details of how the field came to be.

How did you come up with the idea to recreate the Detroit Lions playing field?

I came up with the idea on Wednesday, October 9th, while mowing the lawn. After getting permission from my wife to proceed with the idea, I called my neighbor Jared Blair to start the planning process.

How much time did the two of you invest in creating the field?

It took us approximately 6 hours to plan on Thursday, and then we spent about 8 hours on Friday making the stencils.

We started laying out the field on Saturday using strings and a tape measure to get everything to scale.

We then used utility marking paint for everything on the ground. By 7:00 PM Saturday, we were ready to put the final touches on the ground.

What has the reaction been to the field?

Jared and another friend of mine immediately started posting pictures on Facebook, and people were loving it.

Our local police department saw the Facebook posts and reposted the pictures.

Have you been contacted by anyone from the Detroit Lions about the field?

They were tagged in the posts, but we have not heard from them.

WDIV Channel 4 in Detroit contacted us, and a news crew came by to take photos of the field. The station did air a piece on air, which was nice. (see video and pictures below).

How long have you been a Detroit Lions fan?

I've been a die-hard Detroit Lions fan for around 20 years. I was once a partner in season tickets, and now I've transformed my garage into what I like to call 'The Den'.

If you like the yard, you will love the garage! Now every game, that is where we watch our Detroit Lions play. I never know if I will have 2 people in 'The Den' or 20 people for every game.

Is the field still intact, or has the rain since washed it away?

The field is still intact. The rain did not wash away any of it.

Will you continue to recreate the field throughout the season?

I am not sure how long I will keep it going, it was just something I wanted to do. I hope to keep it until the snow comes, but who knows?

This could be a side hustle for you and Jared. Would you consider recreating the Detroit Lions field for other homes?

As far as doing this for others, I have not thought about it. It is a lot of work!
