We can all agree that safety should always be a top priority when it comes to kids getting on and off school buses.

It's more important now than ever, especially as we keep seeing videos pop up showing drivers blowing right past buses, even with kids standing just feet away from the road. It’s seriously becoming a real problem, and now it looks like Michigan lawmakers are trying to do something about it.

How many times have you been driving and you see a school bus turn on its yellow flashers, and you kind of panic, not knowing exactly what you should do? Do you stop now, or do you wait for the red flashers? Sometimes it's hard to gauge exactly when you should stop.

Turns out, you're not alone. And technically, you're not breaking the law. Right now, Michigan law only requires drivers to stop once those red lights start flashing. Yellow lights? That’s just a heads-up. For now.

The Proposed Law on Flashing Yellow School Bus Lights

According to MLive, earlier this week (May 20), a House committee gave the green light to a bill that would make it mandatory for drivers to slow down and come to a full stop at least 20 feet away from any school bus with flashing yellow lights.

No doubt this would be super confusing at first, and it’s hard to say if it would actually make a huge difference, but hey, it’s worth a shot, right?

How Much You Could Get Fined for Passing a Bus

Breaking the new rule would cost you the same as running a red bus light, a fine anywhere from $100 to $500.

Right now, the bill is just getting started and still needs to make it through the full House before it becomes law.
