Michigan residents gas up their vehicles every day without ever giving a second thought to the small habits that could cost them money, damage their cars, or even put them in danger.

While we are creatures of habit and sometimes overlook the obvious, it's important to be aware of the risks and mistakes that could turn a routine gas stop into a costly or dangerous situation.

I feel like the number one thing that’s just common sense is not smoking while pumping gas or even standing near the pumps. However, you’d be shocked at how many people still do it. Just the other day, I saw a guy filling up his truck, cigarette in hand. He wasn’t right next to the pump—he was standing in front of his truck, but still. What goes through some people’s heads?

This is really just one example of things you should never do while pumping gas, but there are plenty of other mistakes people make without even thinking twice.

Never Make These Mistakes at Michigan Gas Pumps

  • Don’t walk away while pumping gas. It’s actually illegal in Michigan.
  • Stop topping off your tank. Once the pump clicks, you're done. Overfilling can mess up your car’s emissions system and just wastes gas.
  • Put your phone down. Yeah, the risk is low, but static electricity and gas fumes don’t mix. Better safe than sorry.
  • Check for card skimmers. It takes two seconds to tug on the reader and could save you from dealing with fraud headaches later.
  • Use the right container. A random plastic jug isn’t gonna cut it. Only use approved gas cans that are safe (and legal).
  • Turn your car off. Leaving it running while filling up isn’t just risky, it’s a fire hazard. I need to get better about this, I always leave my truck running in the winter while filling up.
  • Stay out of your car until you’re done. Jumping in and out while fueling can build up static electricity. I'm so guilty of this as well, especially in the winter.
