Popular Northern MI Tourist Town Evacuated After Bomb Threat
The historic Fishtown District, a popular summer tourist destination in Leelanau County had quite the scare earlier this week when residents were forced to evacuate due to a bomb threat.
It feels like we're hearing about bomb threats all the time. However, I think this is the first we've heard of one coming out Fishtown in Leland, Michigan.
What Happened?
Apparently, a man threatened to kill his wife and said that he'd placed a bomb somewhere in Fishtown. Police believed the threat to be credible so they evacuated residents and businesses in the area.
According to MLive, deputies received the report at 7:50 p.m. on Monday (April 4) and determined that the subject and his threats appeared to be credible in nature and that potential for loss of life to citizens and/or first responders was possible.
The man responsible for the bomb threat is obviously in some serious heat with authorities. He's accused of breaking state and federal crimes and charged with a number of misdemeanor and felony crimes.
The bomb threat incident remains under investigation by the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office. If you or anyone you know has any information, you should contact Leelanau County Dispatch at 231-256-8800.
Fishtown (Leland) is seriously one of the coolest little villages in the state. It has a population of less than 400 and is one of the only working commercial fishing villages in the state of Michigan. Fishtown was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1973 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.
Leland is roughly 40 minutes northwest of Travers City.
