Although this type of scam is widely recognized, unfortunately, some individuals still fall victim to it. The Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office has issued the statement below via social media to emphasize the importance of spreading the word. Always be cautious when receiving calls that request sensitive personal information.
We are currently dealing with a substantial rise in scams that involve our department's name and phone number, falsely claiming that people are wanted on warrants and owe money. We would like to emphasize that we will never make demands of this nature. It is crucial that you spread awareness among your family and friends, especially the elderly, about these scams and caution them against providing any sensitive information to these fraudsters. You're always welcome to call our office or Central Dispatch non emergency number if you are concerned with a telephone call you may recieve of this nature.
As a general rule, never provide your account or credit card numbers over the phone or by email unless you have verified the source. High pressure for payment screams scam in most instances.
If you are anything like me, you probably don’t answer calls from numbers you don’t recognize. It’s a simple way to protect yourself from potential scams.
