Starbucks Closing 100+ Stores Nationwide, Michigan Included
Starbucks doesn’t seem like one of those companies that would announce store closures, but here we are. I mean, everyone loves Starbucks, right? Maybe not as many as we thought.
The company just revealed it’s shutting down more than 100 stores across the U.S., including some here in Michigan, and cutting about 900 jobs.
According to the Detroit Free Press, this is all part of a plan from CEO Brian Niccol, who took over in 2024 after running Chipotle and Taco Bell. His “Back to Starbucks” plan is all about putting more focus on the customer experience while closing shops that are not pulling their weight. About one percent of stores will close, which works out to somewhere between 150 and 200 locations by the end of the year.
Many of the closures will be the smaller Pick Up stores that were designed for quick grab-and-go service in busy city areas. Starbucks says 80 to 90 of them are closing in more than 20 states, Michigan included. Even after all this, the company will still have more than 18,000 coffee shops across the U.S. and Canada. So yeah, it’s not like they’re hurting or anything.

Starbucks says the layoffs are mostly hitting corporate and support staff, not the baristas. But come on, if your store ends up closing, that means the people serving your coffee are out of a job too. About 900 positions are being cut this time around, and a bunch of open jobs won’t be filled.
Earlier this year, the company eliminated more than 1,000 jobs, so workers are definitely feeling it.
