Why the Detroit Pistons Bussed 300 Kids Out of Flint
At the start of the 2021-22 season, the Detroit Pistons launched an initiative called 'Be Impactful,' aimed at supporting the children of Flint. This program partners with various Flint-based organizations to provide a full game-night experience for local kids at Pistons games. Participants receive transportation, tickets, t-shirts, food vouchers, and a $5,000 grant to support their organizations.
On October 8, 2024, the Boys & Girls Club of Flint and the Crim Sports Program were treated to a memorable night, receiving over 300 tickets and transportation to the Pistons' preseason game against the Phoenix Suns.
The event was particularly special as it took place at Michigan State's Breslin Center, a venue with personal significance for Pistons owner Tom Gores, a proud MSU alum and Flint native. During the game, Suns star Devin Booker, also a Michigan native, debuted his new Nike Book 1s Michigan State ‘Sparty’ PE’s (Player Editions) and generously gifted pairs to the MSU men's basketball team.
While the Pistons faced a 105-97 loss, the night left a lasting impression on the children in attendance.
According to Erica Swilley, the Pistons' VP of Community Relations:
It's important for Tom [Gores] to give back to kids to show them those circumstances and where you're from, it doesn't define who you are. He wants them to see, 'I came from Flint and now I own the Detroit Pistons.'
This initiative not only fosters a sense of community but also inspires the youth of Flint, reminding them of the possibilities that lie ahead.
