This Once-Popular Burton Hangout Could Soon Be Bulldozed
A once-popular bar and restaurant that was a go-to hangout in Burton could soon be nothing more than a pile of rubble. It’s been sitting empty for years on Belsay Road near I-69, but something new could be on the way. However, not everyone in the community is excited about it.
For many years, Bubba O’Malley’s in Burton was the place to be. They had awesome food, cold drinks, and it was always packed every Friday and Saturday night.
After it shut down, Elwood’s tried to carry the torch, but it didn’t last long. They closed in 2018 after just a couple of years. Now, the building just sits there, empty and slowly falling apart.

There were talks for a while about turning the building into a medical marijuana facility, but thankfully, that never happened. Let’s be honest, we’ve got more than enough of those already in Genesee County.
New Gas Station Could Replace Former Burton Restaurant
According to MLive, a developer plans to tear down the old restaurant and build a gas station with a convenience store in its place.
If approved, the gas station will have four regular pumps and two diesel pumps under two canopies, plus plans for some electric charging stations down the road.
Not everyone’s thrilled about the idea. Plenty of folks on the Burton City Chat Facebook page are saying we don’t need another gas station, especially with the former Rite Aid down the road on Belsay also turning into one.

While most of us can agree it’s better than letting the building sit there falling apart, not everyone is convinced another gas station is the answer.
No matter what ends up there, it'll always be the old Bubba O'Malley's spot to me.
