Flint residents can now get loans for much-needed home improvements.

Flint homeowners are now able to get low- to no-interest loans to repair, improve, and renovate their homes. The Flint Home Improvement Fund is being managed by the Genesee County Habitat for Humanity and is intended for homeowners of all income levels and no collateral is needed for this program.

Eligible applicants can use the funding for projects including furnace and hot water heater replacement, roof replacement and repairs, kitchen and bath upgrades, deck and porch replacement, and new siding. The program itself is funded by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, and the Comunity Foundation of Greater Flint.

The criterion for eligibility are as follows:

  • Applicant(s) must own and occupy a home in the city of Flint.
  • Homeowner(s) must pre-qualify and agree to pay for the cost of repairs (including change orders) not to exceed $20,000 at 0-3% interest for up to 84 months.
  • Homeowner(s) must be either a U.S. Citizen or a Permanent Legal Resident.
  • An eligible home must be a single-family residence.
  • The property must be habitable.
  • Income guidelines vary based on funding availability. Repayment is on a sliding scale based on the gross household income and the area median income for Genesee County as indicated by the Department of Housing and Urban Development within the given year applied.

Also, the homeowner(s) must be current with the following:

  • Mortgage loan payment.
  • Homeowner's insurance policy
  • Property taxes
